Steaming is a practical, simple and healthy method, as it allows you to cook vegetables, rice and even fish without a drop of fat, making it an excellent option for children and adults. However, you must consider some tips and tricks to master this type of cooking; here, we tell you everything you need to know about this method!

1. Choose the best pot

To obtain even and fast cooking, it is best to use a relatively large pot to introduce a metal base, a bowl or paper food.

2. Don’t forget the lid!

It may seem obvious, but you must have the pot’s lid since you will only prevent the steam from escaping, so this is essential to master steaming.

3. Get creative

To steam food, it is necessary to prevent it from touching the water, so you can buy a metal base to place the food, put a small bowl down or make small aluminium balls to create a raised floor.

4. Be very careful with the water!

Remember that you must take care of the amount of water you use for steaming, as it should not cover the food. On the other hand, you should heat it until it begins to boil and generates enough steam.

5. Sharpen the knife

A fundamental trick to mastering steaming is to cut ingredients into small pieces, especially when it comes to vegetables like carrots. Otherwise, cooking can take a long time.

6. Keep it simple

If you want to steam something without sacrificing the flavour of your dishes, it is best to make small packets with aluminium foil. You can fill them with fish, vegetables, condiments, spices, butter, olive oil and more; remember to close them before steaming!

What kind of food can I steam?

You can use steam cooking in all kinds of foods, but the time will vary depending on the ingredient:

  • Fish
  • Chicken
  • Seafood
  • dumplings
  • Spinach
  • Artichoke
  • rice rolls
  • peas
  • Green beans
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Asparagus
  • Carrot

However, this type of cooking is not recommended for potatoes, sweet potatoes or chayote.
